Employing a nanny or housekeeper: the checklist

Employing someone at home for the first time? This is the list of what the law asks of you as an employer in the UK. None of it is complicated, and a payroll service can do most of it for you. General information, not legal advice.

Before her first day

  • Check her right to work in the UK yourself: her British or Irish passport, or her Home Office share code, checked online. Keep a record of the check.
  • Agree the salary (gross), hours, days off and duties, and put them in writing.
  • Check your insurance: ask your insurer or payroll service about employer's liability cover.
  • Register with HMRC as an employer, or ask a payroll service to do it.

From her first day

  • Give her a written statement of employment particulars (her main terms) on or before her first day.
  • Pay her through PAYE, with a payslip, at least the National Living Wage for every hour (£12.71 an hour from April 2026).
  • Enrol her in a workplace pension if she qualifies (22 or over and above the earnings threshold).
  • Give her 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year, and her daily and weekly rest.

Where we come in

We check her right to work, experience and references before introducing her, we tell you what applies to your case, and if you wish we introduce you to a payroll service. You employ her; we support you before and after she starts.

Meeting candidates is free. If you hire someone we introduced, our fee is one month of her gross salary, paid once, seven days after she starts. For 12 months, if it does not work out for any reason, we find you another candidate at no extra cost, as many times as needed. There are no monthly fees, and candidates never pay us anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is our agency check enough?+

No. We check before introducing her, but the law asks the employer — you — to do the right to work check before she starts. It only takes a few minutes online with her share code.

Does she need a DBS check?+

It is not compulsory for a nanny employed by a family. Many candidates can provide a basic DBS certificate, and you will see it on her profile.
